Our Bucket List Of 100 Ultimate Road Trips Around The World

Last Updated:

So many roads, so many adventures! So where to start? In this EPIC post, we’ve compiled our bucket list of 100 ultimate road trips around the world. Some are renowned drives, others are journeys we’ve heard or read about, some are drive adventures we’ve mapped out ourselves. The result? A road trip list for a lifetime of unforgettable journeys and experiences, spanning six continents.

It’s a fact: we’re happiest when we’re on the road. There’s nothing quite like the freedom and anticipation of setting out on a driving adventure of your own making: where you call the shots, you decide where to go, what to see, how long you want to stay. A journey where you can enjoy the best of the roads well-travelled, and then leave them behind in search of the low-key and the off-beat, the hidden gems of a destination.

Road tripping is our favourite style of travel, and over the years it’s become a key element of just about every trip we make, whether it’s in our own car, a hire car, touring in an overland truck or bus, or with a local driver/guide and their car.

Years ago, we started compiling random ideas for the world’s best road trips. Our objective? The ultimate road trip bucket list to hang on our virtual travel planning wall and set the agenda for a lifetime of adventures to come.

We were making inroads on our random list too. Until 2020 anyway when, like everyone around the world, circumstances outside our control meant we had to put the brake on our travels for a while. Perfect opportunity, we figured, to take our random list, make it properly epic, and plan our road tripping future for decades to come.

So we started researching. We trawled maps, websites, guidebooks, newsletters, social media and friends’ brains, to pinpoint the best drives in the world, and build our own ultimate road trips list across the globe.

This post is the result: 100 amazing bucket list road trip adventures on every continent (except Antarctica, though we have been there and it has a top spot on our list of Epic Adventures Around the World).

We’ve now refreshed, revised and updated our list and we have more than 100 road trips on it. The world’s a very big place though, so there’s bound to be more to come.

Jump on in and cruise through! We’d love to know which trips you’ve done, or if there are other road trips that should be on our list of best road trips in the world: let us know in the comments at the end of the post.

Let’s hit the road!

Australian-Road-Trips: A car drives along a road with tall trees on both sides.

Our road trip bucket list has been years in the making and we’re diligently making our way through it.

Road Trips in Africa

It’s the continent we’ve travelled the least and there are still vast swathes of Africa that we’re keen to explore. There’s also an enormous diversity of experiences to be found between the desert dunes of the north and the wild and beautiful coastline of the south. So where to even start?

For our top 100, we’ve selected seven mighty African road trip adventures taking in some of the continent’s most epic scenery, wildlife and history, from the top to the bottom, and off the mainland to an island on the Indian Ocean.

1. Baobabs, Wildlife and Pinnacles ~ Madagascar

Antananarivo to Morondava | appx. 1,000+ km (620+ miles) | 10-14 days

In an ideal world, we’d road trip all of Madagascar, but as the fourth largest island in the world, perspective is essential.

So our starting point is a central island journey, from Antananarivo to Morondava, offering a taster of the unique wildlife, nature and landscapes Madagascar is famous for, including the famous Avenue of Baobabs and the World Heritage Tsingy pinnacles.

2. Across the High Atlas ~ Morocco

Marrakech to Merzouga appx. 560km (350 miles) | Up to 1 week

From the World Heritage walled city of Marrakech, this road trip take you on a journey across the High Atlas Mountains, through canyons and gorges, past oases and ancient mud-brick kasbahs to Merzouga, on the edge of the vast, burnt-orange Sahara Desert.

We’ve travelled to Morocco several times now, and on one visit, we cruised this route in the company of Nour, our wonderful Moroccan driver/guide (email us for his details).

We loved this drive and had such a fantastic time with Nour that we decided to continue north with him to his home town the ancient city of Fes, then on to the blue city of Chefchaouen and Tangier. It’s a trip we very much hope to repeat one day. Road trip itineraries to come.

Magical Morocco, with its ancient kasbahs and stunning gorges, deserts and oases, is one of the great road trips in Africa.

3. The Namib Desert ~ Namibia

Windhoek Loop | appx. 2,500 km (1,550 miles) | 10-14 days

Soaring ochre-coloured sand dunes in the world’s oldest desert; grasslands and salt pans where wildlife roam; remarkable granite landscapes and ancient, World Heritage rock art; the world’s largest gathering of Cape fur seals; Africa’s largest canyon; and one of the world’s most notorious stretches of coastline with a name to match.

It all serves to make this one of the most exciting adventure road trips on our list, and one we’ve finally had the chance to explore on a 4×4 overland truck tour. Namibia is absolutely everything it is cracked up to be and more.

Now all we want to do is go back and drive it all again on an independent road trip camping adventure. Stay tuned for the write-up.

The road to the granite peaks of Spitzkoppe – just one of the vast scenes that await on a road trip in Namibia.

4. Cape Town & Garden Route ~ South Africa

Cape Town to Storms River Village | appx. 1,850km (1,150 miles) | Up to 2 weeks

South Africa’s famous Garden Route, a 200km (124 mile) stretch of road from Mossel Bay to Storms River, is said to be one of the most spectacular coastal road trips in the world.

That in itself would be enough for us. So the fact it also offers amazing wildlife watching (on land and sea) and awesome adventure activities has cemented it on our road trip bucket list.

To reach the Garden Route, you travel along the N2 road from Cape Town along the gorgeous South African coastline. Loop back to Cape Town via the Cape Winelands region, and you have one seriously amazing road trip.

We’ve already whetted our appetites exploring parts of this route, road tripping from Cape Town to Hermanus (where we watched southern right whale calves frolicking in the bay), as well as visiting the Cape of Good Hope, the penguins of Boulder’s Beach, and the wine regions of Stellenbosch and Francshhoek. We cover this in our 7-day, looping Cape Town Itinerary. Next goal: drive the Garden Route.

A view over coastal bushes and a palm tree to the ocean with mountains rising in the background.
Drive the gorgeous coastline of South Africa from Cape Town to Hermanus, then beyond to the famous Garden Route.

5. Durban to Drakensberg Mountains ~ South Africa & Lesotho

Durban Loop | appx. 900km (560 miles) | Up to 2 weeks

This is a BIG drive: big beaches, big mountains, big waterfalls, big five wildlife encounters.

Looping from Durban in South Africa along the coast, then inland through national parks and up into the World Heritage Drakensberg Mountains and the famous Sani Pass to Lesotho, this road trip is just one more reason we need to get driving in South Africa again, sooner rather than later.

6. Panorama Route ~ South Africa

Sabie to Blyde River Canyon | appx. 80km (50 miles) | 2-3 days

South Africa has the goods when it comes to road tripping and the Panorama Route is yet another of its renowned scenic drives. It winds through Mpumalanga province, mainly along the R532 road edging of the Drakensberg escarpment between the town of Sabie and the Three Rondavels viewpoint over Blyde River Canyon.

Spanning just 80km, this speccy drive packs in forests, waterfalls, rockpools, gorges and, of course, epic panoramas across the third largest canyon in the world.

You can drive the route, with stops, in just a couple of hours. But we would slow the pace right down and extend the journey from Johannesburg, take in more of the sites around the route, like the gold mining National Monument town of Pilgrim’s Rest, stay along the way, and get out into Blyde River Canyon for some hiking, white water rafting or other activities.

Being so close to Kruger National Park, we would definitely add on some safari time too, before making our way back to Jo’burg. To do this whole route, you’re looking at around 1,200+ km (745+ miles) and more like a week or more, but what a road trip!

7. Sea, Sand and Ancient Carthage ~ Tunisia

Tunis Loop | appx. 1,600km (995 miles) | 10-14 days

If you know us, you’ll know we’re mad for ruins all ruins but especially ruins from the Ancient Roman era.

Tunisia, a wedge of land in Africa’s north, has some of the best ancient sites still standing, including the World Heritage ruins of the Punic city of Carthage, Rome’s arch nemesis.

By all accounts, road tripping through this under-the-radar country’s shifting landscapes – from the Mediterranean coast to the sands of the Sahara – is outstanding.

If having a guide for your exploration appeals, there are a wide range of tours you can organise in advance that will immerse you in the country’s highlights, from desert safaris and archaeological tours to Star Wars set visits and multi-day discovery tours.

Asian Road Trips

From the ancient Silk Road through the mountains and high plains of Central Asia, to the cultural highlights of the Far East and tropical island jungles of the Indonesian archipelago, Asia is a treasure chest of road tripping adventures.

Drive journeys in Asia offer the chance to get off the more typical tourist trails and into villages, local hideaways and harder-to-reach destinations for unforgettable experiences in culture, adventure and history; and the ten epic Asian road trips on our top 100 road trip list do just that.

One of our fave Asian road trips to date: beautiful, off-the-beaten-track Flores in Indonesia.

8. The Remote Himalayas ~ Bhutan

Paro Loop | distance depends on tour | Up to 10 days

The Himalayas remain seriously high on our bucket list, and at the peak is enigmatic Bhutan, a mountain kingdom with a unique culture and spectacular, untouched nature.

While the country’s tourism policies have relaxed a little and tourists no longer need to book an all-inclusive package, if you’re travelling beyond the historic town of Paro and the capital of Thimpu, a guide is still mandatory.

So for this Asian road trip, you would need to have a driver and guide. When you’re surrounded by the world’s highest mountains in a country known as the ‘Land of Happiness’ though, we’re fine with being able to sit back and just take it all in! Find out more about travelling to Bhutan.

9. Beaches, Jungles & Volcanoes of Flores ~ Indonesia

Labuan Bajo to Ende | appx. 800km (500 miles) | 1-2 weeks

This awesome road trip through the Indonesian island of Flores serves up soaring volcanoes, traditional villages, jungley highlands, and some of the best off-the-beaten track beaches in the archipelago.

Add some scuba diving or snorkelling, and close encounters with primeval Komodo dragons in speccy Komodo National Park, and this is one of the best Asian road trips you never heard of.

We road tripped across Flores in a hire car driven by Sipri, our awesome local driver-guide. Check out our Flores itinerary to find out what you can see and do on a road trip (and boat trip) through this low-key Indo island.

Greet the dawn at Kelimutu Crater Lakes, one of many highlights of a Flores road trip.

10. Land of Kings, Rajasthan ~ India

Delhi Loop | appx. 2,600km (1,600 miles) | Up to a month

India’s northern state of Rajasthan is a captivating world of epic fortresses, vibrant temples, extraordinary wildlife reserves, colourful cities, vast desert landscapes, and tantalising cuisines.

This road trip takes in some of India’s most iconic cities and sites, from historic Old Delhi to the grand strongholds of Jaipur, Pushkar, Bikaner and out to the desert fort of Jaisalmer. Then it loops back via the blue city of Jodhpur, the great walled fortress of Kumbhalgarh, beautiful lake-side Udaipur, the tiger safari hub of Ranthambore, and of course Agra, for a visit to the legendary Taj Mahal.

We planned our own road trip itinerary for Rajasthan, but hired a car and driver – someone familiar with navigating the intensity of India’s roads. Read our Rajasthan Road Trip Itinerary for the low-down on one of the most lively and compelling road trips on the sub-continent.

11. The Golden Route ~ Japan

Tokyo to Osaka | appx. 550km (340 miles) | 1-2 weeks

Where to start when it comes to exploring Japan? There’s so much we want to see on this island nation, and there are plenty of awesome road trips to explore off the beaten track. In fact, there are 147 scenic byways around the country to drive.

For our very first trip to the country though, we’re keen to seek out the epic highlights of the famous Golden Route.

While this can be done by public transport (and most people do), we want to get off the main route and see what we can find with our own wheels as we follow the ancient Tokkaido Road between Tokyo and Kyoto and on to Osaka – a magic introduction of big cities, historic towns, rich culture and stunning scenery.

12. Gobi Desert ~ Mongolia

Ulaanbaatar Loop | distance depends on tour | 1-2 weeks

Far-flung and properly off the beaten track, Mongolia makes for no ordinary road trip. Actually, it’s well and truly off-road and from the sounds of it, trips usually take place in functional old rust-bucket vans.

The rough and ready nature of this trip is all part of the fun though, and well worth the rewards: huge sand dunes, vast steppes, Mongol empire ruins, wild horses, endless skies, wonderful isolation…plus nights under the stars in yurts!

13. Seoul to Busan Overlander ~ South Korea

Seoul to Busan | distance varies | 2-3 weeks

We’re still talking about our one brilliant night in Seoul, and we didn’t even make it into the city on that stopover. So we’re eager to get back and explore the country proper.

Road tripping in South Korea is apparently quite easy, and it’s the best way to get off the beaten track to visit the country’s best World Heritage sites, traditional villages, Buddhist temples and monasteries.

There’s a ton of culture, history and nature to experience here, plus Korean BBQ! We’d extend the road trip with a hop across to Jeju Island to drive the renowned Ilju Coastal Road.

14. Emerald Island Circuit ~ Sri Lanka

Colombo Loop | appx. 1,600km (995 miles) | 2-3 weeks

Compact Sri Lanka is a wonderful country to explore by road, serving up beautiful coastlines, jungles and mountains, highland tea plantations, and standout World Heritage cultural and natural sites.

We’ve travelled the traditional tourist loop in Sri Lanka, overlanding from the capital Colombo, up to the ancient cities and sites of the Cultural Triangle, through the highlands around Kandy and the tea plantations of Ella, south to the tropical beaches around Mirissa and Galle, and back to Colombo. Our write-up is here.

We arranged cars and drivers for each leg of our trip, and did one particularly scenic stretch by train. But there’s so much more we’d like to see here with the freedom of our own hire car, so it’s our goal to return.

Asian Road Trips: A lone cyclists winds along a road through hills of tea plantations in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka’s diverse scenes – from historic stupas to serene coast and the tea plantations of the lush central highlands, make for an epic Asia road trip.

15. Island Loop ~ Taiwan

Taipei Loop | appx. 1,080km (670 miles) | 10-14 days

Taiwan is a magical mystery to us, but what we’ve read has put it squarely on our road trip bucket list.

Apparently the roads are great and the sights are many – from the city lights and night markets of the capital Taipei, to the cultural sites, tea plantations, beautiful beaches, hiking opportunities, speccy Taroko Gorge and everything else in between.

More than half of Taiwan is mountain country too, and we’re always up for mountain road tripping.

16. Pamir Highway ~ Tajikistan

Osh, Kyrgyzstan to Khorog, Tajikistan | appx. 700km+ (430 miles) | 7 days

The ‘Stans loom large on our destination bucket list, so it goes without saying the opportunity to get out and explore by road (not just any road either but part of the ancient Silk Road) only adds to the appeal.

The Pamir Highway starts in Kyrgyzstan and winds a route through Tajikistan that by all accounts serves up some of the most majestic mountain scenery in the world.

Our mates over at NOMADasaurus have a detailed guide on how to travel the Pamir Highway that has us very much looking forward to one day making this epic road trip too.

17. Karakoram Highway ~ Pakistan & China

Hasan Abdal, Pakistan to Kashgar, China | appx. 1,300km (810 miles) | 7-10 days

Carving a route through some of the most dramatic terrain on Earth is the Karakoram Highway, a jaw-dropping journey through the Himalaya, Karakoram and Hindu Kush mountain ranges of northern Pakistan and Xinjiang, China.

Called the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’ for the masterful engineering involved in its delivery, the Karakoram route serves up sky-high ranges, pristine lakes, cliffs and gorges, hanging glaciers, high altitude passes, welcoming mountain communities, and a road tripping thrill we imagine must be unlike any other.

This is a road trip usually done in stages, either on a tour or with a private car or jeep and a driver familiar with the challenges of the route. This is a new entry on our updated list and for us, now a peak bucket list goal.

Road Trips in Australia, New Zealand & South Pacific

We’ve been enjoying road trips in Australia for as long as we can remember (me since I was a kid on family holidays, and John since touring Oz in a Ford Econovan as a backpacker in the ’90s). But we’ve still got a serious hit list of road tripping adventures we want to have across our vast island-continent home.

We’ve also been drawn time and again to that other island nation across the pond, New Zealand, as it arguably serves up some of the world’s best road tripping opportunities.

Plus, after discovering the delights of Pacific Island road tripping in Vanuatu and Easter Island, we’ve added Fiji as an island addition in our top 100.

Australian Road Trip: A road winds off towards the Warrumbungles range in NSW.
An Australian road trip is a chance to follow paths less travelled to scenes like this: the beautiful Warrumbungles in NSW.

18. Great Ocean Road ~ Australia

Torquay to Allansford | appx. 243km (150 miles) | 2-4 Days

This iconic Australian coastal scenic route is in the state of Victoria and can be driven in around four hours without stopping. But where’s the fun in that?

This is a journey to savour, exploring the epic coastal scenery both in and out of the car, including the world-famous Twelve Apostles, pristine beaches, rainforest, waterfalls, bushwalks, and outstanding eats and drinks along the way.

We’ve both cruised this stretch in our younger years, but it’s been a very long while and we’re keen to road trip it together. Find out more about the Great Ocean Road.

19. Circle Tasmania ~ Australia

Hobart Loop | appx. 1,800 km (1,120 miles) | 2-4 weeks

Gorgeous Tasmania holds a real allure for us. Located off the south-eastern tip of the Australian mainland, this island state punches well above its weight in the nature, history and foodie stakes. It’s one of just a couple of places we could imagine ourselves retiring to one day.

Naturally, we’re keen to road trip to all of its corners before then. This epic Tasmania circuit by Tourism Australia looks like the perfect place to start.

Add some extra kilometres to include historic Port Arthur and foodie showcase, Bruny Island, plus some world-class hiking side-trips, and we’re raring to go!

View over a vivid blue bay with white sand surrounded by mountains, one of the best road trips in Australia.
Get out of the car and into the natural splendour of Tasmania for views like this one over Wineglass Bay in Freycinet National Park.

20. The South-Western Corner ~ Australia

Perth Loop | appx. 2,000km (1,240 miles) | 2-3 weeks

Take Margaret River – one of the world’s great wine regions, add exquisite white-sand beaches, giant kauri trees, waterfalls, sand dunes, amazing hikes, unique geological formations, historic towns, a gorgeous island with ridiculously cute marsupial residents called quokkas, and it’s no surprise this journey is lauded as one of the best road trips in Australia.

We finally had the chance to explore this region on a looping road trip from Perth to Albany and back, and it it was every bit as epic as we’d hoped. We didn’t make it as far as the orcas of Bremmer Bay or the pearly sands of Esperance, but that’s just one more reason to return.

Check out what you can see and do on a Perth to Albany road trip with our detailed itinerary.

Search out the natural wonders of Australia’s south west, like the extraordinary Pinnacles Desert.

The Big Lap – The Ultimate Australian Road Trip

It’s called ‘The Big Lap’, a classic Aussie understatement for an epic 40,000km (25,000 mile) adventure looping right around the continent of Australia.

It’s long been a tradition for retired older Aussies and young international backpackers (and now van lifers) to load up a 4WD or campervan and embark on this extraordinary journey.

The Big Lap skirts just about all of the Australian coastline, plus a stint inland to the Red Centre and Uluru. How long it takes is entirely up you. Something to look forward to when we’re old(er). In the meantime, read this journo’s take on how to do it.

21. South to North via Explorer’s Way ~ Australia

Adelaide to Darwin | appx. 4,000+ km (2,500 miles) | 2-3 weeks

We might be leaving The Big Lap for later (see above), but this incredible Australian road trip is one we hope to make sooner.

Starting in the South Australian capital of Adelaide, the Explorer’s Way overlands through the southern outback and into the Northern Territory.

Along the way, you visit some of the most iconic destinations on the Aussie continent – Coober Pedy, Uluru and Kata Tjuta, Kings Canyon, Litchfield National Park and much more – before winding up in the tropical city of Darwin. Huge! Check out Tourism NT’s suggested itinerary.

22. Viti Levu Island ~ Fiji

Nadi Loop | appx. 515 km (320 miles) | 12-14 days

A binge watch of Eco-Challenge Fiji a couple of years ago put the spectacular landscapes of Fiji’s main island, Viti Levu, firmly on our road trip list.

While we’ll leave the hard core adventure racing to the pros, exploring this beautiful Pacific island by car opens up a world of possibilities, beyond the all-inclusive resorts.

Search out Viti Levu’s remote corners and experience its diverse natural beauty and outdoor adventure – on land as well as in the sea (diving!) – along with the culture and legendary warmth of the Fijian people.

23. North Island Loop ~ New Zealand

Auckland Loop | appx. 3,200+ km (2,000 miles) | 2-4 weeks

This incredible journey around the North Island of New Zealand, one of our favourite places on the planet, is right up there on our bucket list.

It takes in the North Island’s sublime landscapes of lush forests, thermal springs, pristine beaches, iconic volcanoes and spectacular lakes.

Throw in ultra-cool Wellington with its craft beer and foodie scene, a visit to Middle Earth’s ‘Hobbiton’, and the wineries of Hawkes Bay, and this may just be our ultimate road trip heaven.

Coming soon – Part 1 of this epic road trip!

We’re soon to embark on a two week loop out of Wellington through the centre and south of New Zealand’s North Island.

Our itinerary is huge and we’ve got stacks of exciting stuff planned. Can’t wait! Follow us on Insta and Facebook for updates from the road.

24. South Island Circuit ~ New Zealand

Christchurch Loop | appx. 2,500km (1,550 miles) | 2-4 weeks

New Zealand’s breathtaking South Island is literally Shangri-la: snow-capped peaks, ancient glaciers, spectacular fiordlands and lakes, sweeping coastlines, glittering white and black sand beaches, and charming towns. It’s also catnip for outdoor adventure lovers, with some of the world’s best hiking, kayaking, wildlife experiences and adventure sports.

There are so many routes you can take through the South Island, from the West Coast glaciers road to the Crown Range Road between Queenstown and Wanaka (the country’s highest paved road) and everything in between. Circumnavigate the island, or zigzag all over – however you roll, this place will blow your mind.

So far, we’ve mini-looped once from Christchurch via the glaciers in the west and Kaikoura in the east, and a second time via the wineries of Central Otago and the central east coast. Both times, we’ve taken the magnetic mountains-and-fjords-drive between Queenstown and Milford Sound.

With loads of stand-out destinations like Abel Tasman National Park, the Catlins and Dunedin still to visit though, a return for more South Island New Zealand road tripping is definitely on the cards for us. In the meantime, here’s our list of 15 must-see South Island New Zealand highlights. More to come.

Road to Mount Cook in New Zealand is one of the best drives in the world.
With scenic roads like this, South Island New Zealand consistently ranks as one of our ultimate fave road trips.

Road Trips in Central & South America

Latin America may well be a contender for our favourite part of the world. The vast spaces and incredible, changing scenery of South America are superb for road tripping, while the countries of Central America serve up culture and history in compact abundance.

While there are still many corners of both that we want to explore, the seven journeys here are a combination of our favourites and most anticipated.

25. Ruta 40 ~ Argentina

La Quiaca to Punta Loyola | appx. 5,200km (3,230 miles) | As long as it takes

The epic Ruta 40 through Argentina is one of the world’s longest roads, winding thousands of kilometres from the Andes to Patagonia.

We’ve travelled various segments of Ruta 40 through Argentina over the years, but it would be a dream to road trip its entire length.

It’s a journey of dramatic canyons, deserts and salt flats in the north, through lake regions, wine regions, World Heritage, cultural heritage, historic sites and pampas grasslands in the centre, to the mind-blowing mountains and glaciers in spectacular southern Patagonia.

Sheer peaks with snow rise in the background with a road winding towards them.
Ruta 40 and its off-shoots deliver some of the world’s most beautiful landscapes, like this detour to El Chalten in Patagonia.

26. Route of the Seven Lakes ~ Argentina

Bariloche to San Martín de los Andes | appx. 190km (120 miles) | 1-3 days

The more time we spend in Argentina, the more places end up on our bucket list to come back and explore by car.

We knew nothing about the Ruta de los Siete Lagos – Route of the Seven Lakes – when we arrived in the lake-side town of Bariloche, and our expectations were batted completely out of the ballpark.

This road trip, a relatively short section of Ruta 40, can be done in a day – or more slowly – as you follow a winding route through the sweeping forests, soaring peaks and serene lakes of northern Patagonia. Read our one-day road trip itinerary for the Route of the Seven Lakes.

Ultimate Road Trips: A lake with tree-covered mountains rising to each side.
One of many lakes you’ll cruise past on the stunning Ruta de los Siete Lagos road trip out of Bariloche.

27. High Desert to Salt Flat ~ Chile & Bolivia

San Pedro de Atacama, Chile to Uyuni, Bolivia | appx. 550km (340 miles) | 4-5 days

The Atacama Desert the world’s highest, driest, oldest desert is simply breathtaking, both figuratively and, given the altitude, quite literally.

From the volcano-pitted moonscape of the Chilean plateau around San Pedro de Atacama, it’s just a hop across the high Andes to Bolivia and another otherworldly destination, the vast Uyuni Salt Flat: the largest salt desert in the world.

This is a road trip where it’s best to leave the driving to the pros: independent driving isn’t recommended due to the remote nature and challenging conditions. Most people join a 3 or 4 day tour in a shared or private 4×4 with a driver out of San Pedro de Atacama, Uyuni or La Paz, taking in sites like the Bolivian Altiplano, the flamingo-filled Laguna Colorada, hot springs, geysers, ancient rock art and canyons, before culminating in a visit to the Uyuni Salt Flat. Check out some of the tours departing San Pedro de Atacama here.

This is what we set out to do, but were thwarted by sudden snowstorms that closed the border between Chile and Bolivia. We’re determined to go back and try again one day.

A car sits on a vast white salt plain in Bolivia.
Experience the otherworldly landscape of the Uyuni salt flats on a 4WD road trip from Chile to Bolivia (gracias to John’s brother Mick for the photo we wish we’d had the chance to take!)

28. Carretera Austral ~ Chile

Puerto Montt to Villa O’Higgins | appx. 1,225km (760 miles) | 1-2 weeks

Patagonia is completely addictive. The nature, the wildlife, the outdoor adventure….we could go on.

Our short road trips in Chile have whetted our appetites to explore more of this gorgeous country by car and the Carretera Austral, Chile’s Route 7 hits all the marks.

The road winds along the parks, rivers, lakes and hot springs of Chilean Patagonia, and offers plenty of opportunities for trekking and out-of-car nature immersion. Check out Chile Travel’s profile of the Carretera Austral.

Drive the Lago Llanquihue Loop

If you don’t have time to drive the Carretera Austral (and even if you do!), we highly recommend the much shorter Lago Llanquihe loop drive.

This 200km (124 mile) road trip, which is easily done in a day, starts just north of Puerto Montt in the lakeside town of Puerto Varas.

The route loops right around beautiful Lake Llanquihue, serving up spectacular scenery and nature stops, including a trip up the majestic Osorno Volcano.

A snow-capped volcano rises above trees and a rocky foreground with a river on one of our road trips in Chile.

29. Parks & Wildlife ~ Costa Rica

San José Loop | appx. 1,100 km (685 miles) | Up to 2 weeks

This little wedge of land in Central America is one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots, making Costa Rica an outstanding destination for nature lovers.

With a quarter of the country protected in reserves, the hardest part of a road trip is deciding what you can stand to leave out.

Our overland loop through the parks of Manuel Antonio, Monteverde, La Fortuna and Tortuguero served up pristine rainforest, soaring volcanoes, hot springs, beautiful beaches and wildlife watching in epic abundance. Road trip itinerary to come. In the meantime, here’s our round-up of must-see parks in Costa Rica.

30. Classic West ~ Cuba

Havana Loop | appx. 1,150km (715 miles) | 2 weeks

Legendary Cuba is vibrant, evocative and has a character all its own.

From the lively, crumbling capital of Havana, a journey around the western half of this island nation serves up colourful rural villages, tobacco plantations, pretty beaches and World Heritage cities. There are opportunities for horse-riding, scuba diving, cycling and, of course, vintage car rides.

While we didn’t drive ourselves (it’s certainly possible but not generally advisable for tourists), our classic car road trips between destinations took this trip to another level. Check out our 2-week Cuba itinerary.

Road Trip List: Blue vintage car cruises past the University of Havana, Cuba.
Vintage car or otherwise, driving through Cuba is a classic bucket list road trip.

31. Yucatan Peninsula ~ Mexico

Cancun Loop | appx. 2,500 km (1,550 miles) | 2-3 weeks

Mexico’s vast, jungley Yucatan peninsula draws us back time and again to explore its pearly beaches, otherworldly cenotes, vivid historic towns, vibrant reefs, and epic ancient Mayan ruins (all of it fuelled by delicious tacos al pastor).

While it’s pretty easy to get around the Yucatan by public transport or tour, we found hiring a car offers a chance to go at your own pace and easily search out the many gems of this awesome, ancient place. We’ll be back.

While Europe may not have the landmass of some other continents, its 44 countries and sheer diversity of people, place, history and culture have led to it accounting for almost half of the entries on our top 100 road trip bucket list!

Having spent countless hours, days and weeks meandering by car through the UK and western Europe, plus a couple of months road tripping through northwestern Europe and Scandinavia, we know the possibilities for European road trips are endless.

So while we’ve managed to compile close to fifty road trips here which in our opinion are an absolute must, there are literally hundreds more just waiting in the wings.

A road winds up from a lake with green mountains sweeping up to the right.
Europe’s wildly diverse landscapes alone will keep us busy road tripping for the rest of our lives.

Plan ahead with a pre-trip guide to driving in Europe

Driving in a foreign country can be daunting.

We know that anxious feeling that comes with wrangling a car where the steering wheel is on the opposite side to what we’re used to, the lane directions are reversed, the road rules are unfamiliar, even the traffic light sequencing is sometimes different!

If you’re heading to the UK, Ireland, Italy, Germany, France or Spain, and you want to get on top of everything you need to know for a safe, happy and stress-free road trip, it’s worth checking out these online tutorials and driving guides from Tripiamo.

Specifically developed for international travellers, and reviewed and certified by experts in the countries they’re prepared for, the driving guides will give you a practical insight into what it’s like to drive where you’re headed, and all the information you need to feel more confident behind the wheel.

32. Across the Austrian Alps ~ Austria

Innsbruck to Vienna | appx. 1,200km (745 miles) | 2 weeks

A whirlwind winter weekend in Innsbruck introduced us to the gorgeous alpine-scapes of Austria, and returning to road trip the country is a must for us.

Our planned journey starts in Innsbruck, and from there winds a high-altitude path into the western mountains and across the country’s alpine ranges, via the famous Grossglockner High Alpine Road (one of the world’s ultimate alpine drives and a day-trip all its own), to Vienna in the east.

It’s not all epic mountains though – great wining, dining, amazing hiking, history, architecture and much more also await on this stunning Austrian adventure.

Cruise the highs of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road ~ Austria

Starting in the town of Fusch and finishing in Heiligenblut am Grossglockner, the renowned Grossglockner High Alpine Road is said to be one of the world’s most beautiful mountain drives.

This ribbon of road winds through Austria’s Hohe Tauern National Park, serving up expansive mountain-and-valley panos as you travel around 36 hairpin bends over 48km (30 miles), and reach altitudes over 2,500 metres.

Set aside half a day to a day to explore this stunning route, and book your ticket online ahead of time – Grossglockner is a toll road.

33. The Adriatic Highway ~ Croatia

Rovinj to Dubrovnik | appx. 800km (500 miles) | 10 days +

Our experience of Croatia – of historic cities, charming islands, turquoise waters and epic sunsets – has been more than enough to convince us that a road trip along this stunning ‘Kings Landing’ coast is a must.

Cue the Adriatic Highway, the D8 State Road, which winds a magical coastal path from Rijeka in the country’s north to Dubrovnik in the south. We’d extend the journey a smidge by starting in Rovinj, on the Istrian peninsula.

This is a journey of sea-meets-mountain landscapes, fishing villages and medieval towns, island views, the magic historical streetscapes of Split and Dubrovnik, and the joy that comes from feeling the wind in your hair as you hug the coast.

Discover Croatia’s beautiful coastline on a road along the Adriatic Highway.

34. Scandi Explorer ~ Denmark, Norway & Sweden

Copenhagen Loop | appx. 1,850km + car ferry | 2+ Weeks

This Nordic journey takes in the cool Scandi cities, historical highlights and beautiful, changing landscapes of Denmark, southern Norway and southern Sweden.

Start in Denmark with rolling farmland, wind-whipped coastlines and lively cities like Copenhagen and Aarhus. Then cross over to Norway by car ferry for a drive along sheer fjords, snow-tipped peaks and serpentine mountain roads where waterfalls tumble beside the tarmac. Then on into Sweden, where pine forest-lined roads pass tranquil lakes and sacred Viking sites to the elegant streets of Stockholm.

We travelled this route as part of a broader, 3-month road trip through northwest Europe and Scandinavia, and it was phenomenal. But as we were rained on for most of the journey, it’s a route we’re keen to travel again, hopefully in better weather. Itinerary write-ups to come.

Road Trips in Europe: The 19th century Rubjerg Knude lighthouse rises above sand dunes in Denmark.
Road trips in Europe mean diverging from the tourist trail to visit offbeat sites like this – Rubjerg Knude, the lighthouse teetering on cliff-edge sand dunes in Jutland, Denmark.

35. The Mysterious Faroe Islands ~ Denmark

Tórshavn Loop | appx. 560km (350 miles) | 5-7 days

The seed for a trip to the Faroe Islands was planted as we stood looking out to sea from the port of Hirtshals in Denmark, and it’s well and truly taken root.

This wild and remote cluster of islands is in the northern Atlantic, a far-flung, self-governing outpost of the Danish kingdom. It has an air of magic and legend about it, and the scenery to suit as you take in charming villages, coastal drama, windswept hikes and fjord paddles, surprisingly good dining, and many sheep.

While driving around an archipelago seems unlikely, the Faroes’ bridges, under-sea tunnels and ferries make road tripping here entirely possible and, by all accounts, entirely unforgettable.

36. Baltic Road Trip ~ Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania

Tallinn to Vilnius | appx. 1,200km (745 miles) | 2 weeks

Apart from a weekend in Tallinn for me in the early noughties, the Baltic states remain a tantalising unknown to us. What better way to discover this under-the-radar corner of northeastern Europe than by car?

Highlights of this weaving road trip through Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania include castles, national parks, cool cities with Baroque and Art Nouveau architecture, beaches, charming villages, history in droves, and plenty of scenic driving.

37. Alsace Wine Route ~ France

Marlenheim to Thann | appx. 170km (106 miles) | A couple of days

A driving route wholly dedicated to wine? How could we not include it on our ultimate road trip bucket list?

The historic Alsace region is in France’s north-east near Germany and Switzerland, and vino is truly in its DNA – it’s been producing wine since Roman times.

This isn’t a long road trip, but with dozens of picturesque villages and around 1,000 wine producers, it’s a journey we would want to take slow and savour (literally). Find out more.

38. Ancient Provence ~ France

Marseilles Loop | appx. 500km (310 miles) | Up to 2 weeks

Some two thousand years ago, the Romans turned up in south-east France, named it Provincia Romana and started building. Their legacy can still be found all over modern-day Provence, in the form of ancient theatres, temples, bridges, roads, aqueducts and monuments.

We’ve driven parts of this route and mapped a bunch more sights for a fantastic road trip into the past, taking in historic cities like Aix-en-Provence, Arles, Les Baux-des-Provence, Avignon and Nîmes, and many extraordinary sites in between.

Also, this is one of the world’s great wine regions. Ancient history + wineries = our perfect European road trip.

Provence road trip in Europe: Ancient Pont du Gard.
Built to last: Ancient Pont du Gard, highlight of a road trip in Provence, still stands 2000 years after the Romans built it.

39. The Brittany Coast ~ France

Cancale to Perros-Guirec | appx. 350km (220 miles) | 5-7 days

If the beautiful coastal scenery of eastern Brittany wasn’t enough to put this road trip on our list, the walled city of St Malo, along with primeval forest trails, medieval villages, ambient castle ruins, dramatic headlands and rugged cliffs, sandy beaches, and renowned food scene have cemented it there.

Capping off the highlights is the the striking World Heritage rise of Mont St Michel, just over the border in Normandy. Head here for a suggested itinerary from Tourisme Bretagne.

40. Island Tripper, Corsica ~ France

Bastia to Bonifacio | appx. 600km (372 miles) | 7-10 days

It took just one pic of a winding coastal road along mountains rising above a crystal clear cove to put a Corsica road trip firmly on our bucket list.

This French island, birthplace of Napoleon, packs a Mediterranean punch with wildly diverse landscapes, cute villages, outdoor adventure, beachside chill, delicious food and wineries, all in a relatively compact, very road-trippable space.

41. La Route des Grandes Alpes ~ France

Thonon-les-Bains to Menton | appx. 700km (435 Miles) | 3-5 days

You may recognise this famous alpine route – it’s one of the world’s premier cycling courses and its mountain passes often feature as stages of the Tour de France.

However, La Route des Grandes Alpes (the Grand Alpine Route) started out in the early 20th century as a scenic driving route for cars and motorbikes, and it remains one of the greats of alpine driving.

Travelling between Thonon-les-Bains on Lake Geneva and the town of Menton on the French Riviera, this journey through the French Alps ticks all the boxes: national parks, climbing routes, sky-high villages and lakes, around 20 mountain passes, and some of the highest roads in Europe. Aim to drive it between June and October as it’s closed over winter.

42. Road Trip the Rivieras ~ France, Monaco & Italy

Nice, France to La Spezia, Italy | appx. 315km (195 miles) | 7-10 days

Despite taking in three countries, road tripping the Cote D’Azur from Nice to Monaco and onwards through the Italian Riviera will put little more than a few hundred kilometres on the odometer.

But this is said to be some of the most idyllic coastal driving out there: a gorgeous stretch of the Mediterranean lapped by turquoise waters, with beautiful beaches and pretty villages worth lingering in.

It culminates in La Spezia on the edge of the renowned Cinque Terre, a destination we’re itching to get back to and hike again. Leave a couple of days at the end to explore this magical sweep of national park and coastal villages by train and on foot.

Colourful Vernazza on the Cinque Terre.
Beautiful Vernazza on the Cinque Terre awaits at the further reaches of a European road trip along the French and Italian Rivieras.

43. Journey to the Caucasus ~ Georgia

Tbilisi Loop | appx. 1,100km (685 miles) | 2 weeks

Europe’s far eastern country of Georgia has become a traveller hotspot in recent years and we’ve heard lots of good stuff about it.

We’ve also heard road tripping is the best way to get out into the countryside and explore the myriad landscapes, cool historic sites – like the medieval Rabati fortress and Vardzia cave monastery – and the many natural highlights, from canyons, waterfalls, lakes and hot springs to the high peaks of the Caucasus Mountains.

44. The German Alpine Road ~ Germany

Lindau to Schönau | appx. 484km (300 miles) | 5-8 days

People have been drawn to the Bavarian delights of the Deutsche Alpenstraße – scenic, traditional, cultural and culinary – for more than 160 years.

More than a dozen villages and towns dot this beautiful route from Lake Constance to Lake Königssee. It meanders via forests, valleys, alpine meadows, mountains and lakes, and passes dozens of castles, churches, monasteries and palaces. Start planning here.

45. The Castle Road ~ Germany

Mannheim, Germany to Prague, Czechia | appx. 780km (485 miles) | 1-2 weeks

We love a good castle, so naturally, the greatest castle road trip in Europe is a mandatory entry on our list.

Winding a route through scenic central Germany before crossing into Czechia, the Burgenstraße links more than 60 historic citadels, including castles, palaces and aristocratic residences.

We’ve never personally experienced castle fatigue, but we suspect some serious selective planning would be in order for this trip to make sure that didn’t happen.

Top sites include the grand Renaissance ruins of Heidelberg Castle and the medieval fortress of Nuremberg Castle, as well as the World Heritage Baroque palace of the Würzburg Residence.

46. The Romantic Road ~ Germany

Füssen to Würzburg | appx. 400km (250 miles) | 3-4 days

More castles, yes, and dramatic ones at that, including the famous, Disney-esque Neuschwanstein.

But tales of Germany’s Romantische Straße through Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg tell a delightful road tripping story of postcard perfect scenery, colourful villages and cobblestoned medieval towns.

Plus there’s Bavarian beer at one end and wine country at the other end. Perfect!

47. Athens to Antiquity ~ Greece

Athens to Thessaloniki | appx. 1,250km (775 miles) | 2 weeks

Greece is rightly renowned for its beautiful islands, of which we’ve sampled a few. But we’ve always wanted to hit the road on the mainland and experience the culture, scenery and archaeological wonders of this very ancient place.

So we’ve mapped a bucket list road trip here that starts in the capital Athens and winds a route through some of the country’s most epic historical sites, places where history still echoes in the ruins and legends live on, like Corinth, Mycenea, Olympia, Delphi, Meteora and Philippi.

48. Minoan Crete ~ Greece

Heraklion Loop | appx. 745km (460 miles) | Up to 2 weeks

Crete is an island of myth and legend: home to the ancient Minoan civilisation and the mythological half-man, half-bull Minotaur.

Signs of this highly advanced people remain at archaeological sites such as Knossos and Phaestos. But our own road trip through Crete also surprised us with rugged mountain scenery, caves, beaches, beautiful gorges for hiking, Venetian architecture and seriously good food. Road trip highlights to come.

49. The Ring Road ~ Iceland

Reykjavic Loop | appx. 1,350km (840 miles) | Up to 2 weeks

Iceland is an otherworldly island of icy glaciers, brooding volcanoes and soothing hot springs; where the summer sun shines all night and strange lights dance across the sky in winter.

We were completely captivated on our first road trip through Iceland’s south; we’ve written about it in our 7-day Southern Iceland Road Trip Itinerary.

Our next goal is to explore the rest of the island via the famous Ring Road. It’s said to be one of the best road trips in Europe, and based on what we’ve seen so far, we believe it.

The surreal landscapes of Iceland make for one of the best road trips in the world.
Iceland’s otherworldly landscapes make it one of the world’s best road trips.

50. The Wild Atlantic Way ~ Ireland

Kinsale to Letterkenny/Muff | appx. 2,500km (1,550 miles) | 2-4 weeks

Ireland remains one of our favourite destinations, ever since we first road tripped a loop around much of the country – and got engaged en route – in 2006.

The Wild Atlantic Way – the world’s longest signposted road trip route – had been a goal ever since that momentous trip, and we’ve finally made it back to traverse the entire route.

Spanning six regions of diverse and spectacular Irish coastal terrain, secluded beaches, ancient ruins, charming villages and lively pubs, this journey can be done in sections, or in one long, incomparable road trip in either direction.

Check out our 2 Week Wild Atlantic Way Road Trip Itinerary and start planning your own incredible Irish drive adventure.

A road runs alongside a cliff above the ocean in Ireland.
Ireland’s wild west coast gets a vote from us as one of the world’s best road trips.

51. Amalfi Coast & Bay of Naples ~ Italy

Miseno to Salerno | appx: 150km (95 miles) | 7-10 days

The Amalfi Coast is one of Italy’s most popular road trips, and rightly so: it’s a captivating sweep of winding coastal road via dramatic cliffs, pastel-hued villages clinging to steep rises, and breathtaking sea views.

The stunning SS163 coastal route between Positano and Vietri sul Mare is barely 50km (31 miles) though, and it can be driven end to end in a matter of hours. So this is a journey to take slowly and linger along the way.

We extended our own Amalfi Coast trip to start on the opposite side of the Bay of Naples at ancient Miseno, exploring the myth-heavy landscape of Baiae, the Campi Flegrei and the Cumaean Sybil’s Cave.

From there, we travellied around the coast in the shadow of Vesuvius to explore the vibrant city of Naples, the extraordinary ruins of Herculaneum and Pompeii, and charming cliff-side Sorrento, before winding through the spectacular coastal towns of Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. Itinerary to come.

52. The Great Dolomites Road ~ Italy

Bolzano to Cortina d’Ampezzo | appx. 110km (68 miles) | 7 days

Given how much time we’ve spent in Italy over the years, it’s a surprise even to us that we haven’t yet made it to Italy’s majestic alpine region, especially when one of the GOATs of alpine road tripping awaits there.

The Grande Strada delle Dolomiti (the Great Dolomites Road) winds a mind-blowing route through the spectacular surrounds of the World Heritage-listed Dolomites mountains between the towns of Bolzano and Cortina d’Ampezzo.

You could reasonably drive this route in a long and busy day or less. But we reckon a place like this deserves time to fully immerse in its striking landscapes of rugged limestone peaks, high passes, lush valleys, lakes and meadows. That means plenty of time out of the car too for hiking, exploring mountain villages, and soaking up the scenery.

This is a summertime road trip: you can only drive the full length of the Great Dolomites Road between early June and early September.

Touch the sky on Italy’s Stelvio Pass

Just 3 hours to the west of Bolzano is another of Europe’s iconic, sky-high alpine routes: the Stelvio Pass.

Linking Bormio on the south side and Prato allo Stelvio on the north side, this iconic 47km (29 mile) route serves up expansive mountain-and-valley vistas, glacier views, tunnels, 48 twisting hairpin bends, and summits at over 2,750 metres (9,000+ feet)!

Like the Great Dolomites Road, snow closes the Stelvio Pass over winter. It’s usually open from late May/early June to October, but check before you go.

53. Tuscan Wineries & Central Italian Hill Towns ~ Italy

Florence Loop | appx. 700km (435 miles) | 2 weeks

Rolling hills, expansive vineyards, striking medieval hill towns: our love affair with Italy was sealed on the winding roads of Tuscany, Urbino and Le Marche.

This is peak Italian road tripping – search out Renaissance masterpieces in Florence, then explore medieval laneways, peaceful wineries and historic piazzas as you road trip the countryside between the historic hill towns of Urbino, Assisi, Orvieto, Siena and San Gimignano.

This is one of those road trips we would do again and again (though really, with all the pasta, pizza and vino, we should walk it). Check out our Road Trip Itinerary for Tuscany, Umbria and Le Marche.

54. Explore the ‘Heel of the Boot’ in Puglia ~ Italy

Bari Loop | appx. 1,000km (620 miles) | 2 weeks

One of our most recent Italian road trips is this one through Puglia, in the ‘heel’ of Italy’s boot.

This wedge of corner country is packed with gorgeous coastlines and popular beaches, charming villages to explore on foot (including the World Heritage trulli village of Alberobello), eye-catching hill towns, historic cities like Lecce with beautiful Baroque buildings, sensational food and wine, and plenty of opportunities to get off the beaten path for a taste of bucolic southern Italy.

Start planning your own Puglia adventure with our detailed 2 week Puglia Road Trip Itinerary, in which we also cross into the next region for a visit to the incomparable ancient troglodyte city of Matera.

55. Sardinia Island Loop ~ Italy

Cagliari Loop | appx. 1,500km (930 miles) | 2 weeks

Just when we thought road tripping Italy couldn’t get any better, we met Sardinia. The spectacular white-sand beaches here, lapped by turquoise waters, are said to be some of the most beautiful on the Mediterranean, and we’re inclined to agree.

More than just a pretty face though, Sardinia has charming medieval villages; dramatic coastal mountains best viewed from a boat; escarpments, caves and canyons perfect for hiking; intriguing Bronze Age towers to explore; and an excellent food and wine scene.

Two weeks on the road here gave us a tantalising taste of this enchanting island and we hope to one day return. See what you can get up to in Sardinia with our comprehensive Sardinia Road Trip Itinerary.

Get off the beaten track and search out scenes like this when you road trip in Sardinia.

56. Ancient Sicily ~ Italy

Palermo Loop | appx. 1,300km (810 miles) | 2-3 weeks

The wonderful Italian island of Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, is ideal for road tripping.

Spectacular World Heritage ancient sites, including some of the very best preserved temples and in-situ mosaics, beautifully evocative villages, historic and Baroque cities, tempting wine regions, an active volcano to climb, and endlessly buonissimo eating experiences guarantee an unforgettable Italian drive holiday.

We spent two weeks circumnavigating the island and searching out its many highlights. Kick-start your planning with our Sicily Road Trip Itinerary.

57. Monasteries, Fortresses & Wine ~ Moldova

Chișinău Loop | appx. 850km (530 miles) | 7-10 days

Wedged between Romania and Ukraine, this little nation flies largely under the tourist radar.

Formerly part of Romania and then the Soviet Republic, Moldova’s Orthodox Christian fabric has led to the many monasteries and fortresses which are a highlight of road tripping here.

It also has one of the world’s most ancient winemaking traditions and the world’s largest wine cellar. Say no more.

58. Mountains, Coasts & Fjords ~ Norway

Oslo to Trondheim | appx. 2,800km (1,740 miles) | At least 2 weeks

Vast, rugged and breathtakingly beautiful, Norway makes for an unparalleled road tripping adventure.

We drove and camped a coast-and-fjord route from the capital Oslo to Trondheim, taking in some of the most incredible scenery we’ve yet laid eyes on: high mountains, narrow fjords, creeping glaciers, charming towns.

While we were out of the car often – hiking, kayaking, ice-climbing, marvelling at expansive panos – with the landscapes we were driving through, we loved our time in the car just as much as our time out.

We’ve still got the northern Svalbard region to explore, but southern Norway makes for an epic experience all its own. Read our 2 week Norway Road Trip Itinerary.

Road Trip Europe: Road winds through green mountains in Norway.
Some of the best driving roads in Europe are to be found in spectacular Norway.

The Most Spectacular Drive in the World?

It’s a big call, and we’re ready to eat our words, but we reckon the 230km (140 mile) drive along the Fv55, Rv15 and Fv63 roads between Sogndal and Geiranger in Norway is at least a contender for the world’s most beautiful – read why we think so here.

Even better, the thrill amps up on the road out of Geiranger. Continue on along the stunning Fv63 road beyond the fjord-side village and you’ll wind around the serpentine turns of a rise nicknamed the ‘The Eagle Road‘.

A car ferry and another 40km leg will then bring you to the famous switchbacker, Trollstigen – the troll’s ladder – a 6km (3.7 mile) mountain pass with 11 hairpin bends.

59. Castaway on Flores, Azores ~ Portugal

Santa Cruz Das Flores Loop | appx. 100km (62 miles) | 3-4 days

There’s a mystical quality to the lush, volcanic landscapes of Flores, one of nine islands in Portugal’s Azores archipelago.

You could explore Flores in a busy day, and you’d be pushing to reach 100km on the odometer, even if you drive the whole thing.

But with wild and windswept scenery, waterfalls in abundance, cute villages, lovely hikes and even some diving to be had, we’d look to slow the drive time and linger longer along the way.

60. Lisbon to Porto ~ Portugal

Lisbon to Porto via Duoro Valley | appx. 850km (530 miles) | 10-14 days

Our one taste of Portugal to date is the delightful city of Porto, and we fell in love with its riverside setting, rich history and port wine heritage. So we’re itching to get back and explore Portugal more broadly.

Our ideal Portugal road trip weaves a route north from the capital Lisbon, taking in rugged coastline and wine country, historic monasteries and baroque palaces, whitewashed fishing villages and medieval towns, and multiple World Heritage sites.

No journey would be complete without a couple of days exploring the terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley and its prehistoric rock art. From there, it’s an easy hop to Porto.

61. Transfăgărășan & Transalpina Roads ~ Romania

Bucharest Loop | appx. 800km (500 miles) | 1 week

We’re keen to explore Romania by road, starting with a multi-day drive to and from Bucharest, looping across two of the country’s epic mountain roads.

The 151km (94 mile) Transfăgărășan Road gets a tick from the Top Gear crew, winding a thrilling route across the Fagaras Mountains to Transylvania; with sheer, barrier-free drops of over 300 metres (1,000 feet) in places.

The 148km (92 mile) Transalpina Road is Romania’s highest, offering panos from over 2,145 metres (7,037 feet) above sea level.

Both offer standout alpine hiking and scenery, as well as waterfalls, historic castles, even the ruins of an ancient Dacian fortress.

62. Highlights of Slovenia

Ljubljana Loop | appx. 550km (340 miles) | 10-14 days

A Slovenia road trip is all about the outdoors and driving through speccy scenery to reach even more speccy places that can be explored on foot.

Our itinerary goals here include Slovenian highlights such as Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj, hiking through high mountains and deep gorges, exploring the Adriatic coastal city of Piran and its Venetian past, searching out World Heritage caves, as well as a medieval castle built into a cave, and much more.

63. Slovakia Showcase

Bratislava Loop | appx. 1,000km (620 miles) | 10-14 days

Another intriguing and beautifully scenic country, Slovakia promises outstanding cultural, historic and nature experiences on a road trip looping from the capital to the east of the country and back.

Medieval towns, evocative castles and sites that tell more recent tales of the country’s struggles to come into its own, sit alongside lakes, caves and a backdrop of the stunning Tatras Mountains.

64. Iberian Circuit ~ Central and Southern Spain

Madrid Loop | appx. 1,800km (1,120 miles) | 14 days

Spain is made for road tripping, and the central and southern regions from Madrid through Castilla y León, Extramadura and Andalucía are especially awesome.

Our Iberian circuit road trips 5,000 years worth of history, starting in the vibrant capital Madrid, then heading south to explore spectacular World Heritage sites like Old Salamanca, Seville’s Alcázar, Granada’s Alhambra, and Córdoba’s Mezquita.

Walk grand Spanish boulevards, explore medieval alleys, historic pueblos blancos (whitewashed villages) and neolithic dolmens, and indulge in amazing food and wine all the way.

Start planning your own Iberian adventure with our central and southern Spain Road Trip Itinerary.

Road Trip Spain: Puente Nuevo crosses El Tajo gorge in Ronda.
Puente Nuevo spans the deep El Tajo gorge in Ronda, one of the many Andalucian highlights that have put this part of Spain on our road trip bucket list.

65. The Basque Circuit ~ Spain

Bilbao Loop | appx. 480km (300 miles) | 7-10 days

Tucked into a northern corner of the Iberian peninsula, the autonomous Basque region, Euskadi, is a land unto itself, with traditions and a language all its own.

The coastline is ruggedly beautiful and its beaches and resort towns renowned. Best of all, this is the unofficial foodie capital of Europe. Pintxos bars abound (the best creation ever!), as do Michelin star restaurants, and the famed Rioja wine region is right on the doorstep.

66. Canary Islands ~ Spain

Tenerife & La Gomera | appx. 375km (233 miles) | Up to 2 weeks

John’s very first foray abroad was a trip with mates from London to Tenerife when he was just 16 – a rite of passage!

Beyond the resorts where sun-starved Brits congregate though, a road trip of the biggest Canary island, Tenerife, and its smaller neighbour, La Gomera, offers magnificent coastal scenery, forest escapes, charming villages, beaches for chilling, and one epic hiking opportunity to the peak of an active volcano, the 3,718m-high Mount Teide. This is high on the list for us.

67. West Coast Mallorca ~ Spain

Palma to Formentor Peninsula | appx. 180km (233 miles) | 1 week

Mallorca is another sun-drenched Spanish isle beloved by Brits. Like the Canaries though, steer the car well clear of the beach resorts, and there’s a dramatically beautiful island to discover.

Word is the west coast is particularly spectacular, so we’re keen to trail a route from the capital Palma through the Tramuntana Mountains to the island’s northern tip. While not a long trip by distance, it sounds like one to enjoy slowly.

68. Across the Pyrenees ~ Spain & France

Lourdes Loop | appx. 700km (435 miles) | 1 week

The great range of the Pyrenees mountains forms a natural boundary between France and Spain, a stunning region that can be explored by road.

The must-sees of the central range span breathtaking canyons and glacier-gouged rocky amphitheatres, mountain lakes, a sky-high observatory, and San Juan de la Peña, a monastery embedded in the foot of a cliff, to name just a few.

69. Swiss Alps Explorer ~ Switzerland

Lausanne to Zurich | appx. 485km (300 miles) | 7-10 days

Driving through the incredible scenery of the Swiss Alps is sky high on our road trip bucket list.

Our Swiss road trip itinerary goals make the most of the picturesque lakeside cities like Lausanne and Interlaken, the medieval old towns of Bern and Lucerne, and the dramatic, snow-capped mountain panos of Lauterbrunnen and Grindlewald.

We’d also take on the switchbacks of the famous, 30-35km (19-22 mile) Furka Pass.

70. Ultimate Turkish Delight ~ Türkiye

Istanbul Loop | appx. 4,500 km (2,800 miles) | 1 month+

Thousands of years at the cross-roads of eastern and western civilisations have left an extraordinary legacy in the World Heritage and ancient sites to found all over Türkiye. The landscapes here are wildly diverse, the food is exceptional, the culture rich and enduring, and the history astounding.

Türkiye is one of our all-time favourite countries and while we’ve driven, bussed and toured various parts of it, our ultimate road trip here is an epic looping journey from Istanbul to the Black Sea, then south to the extraordinary sites of Mount Nemrut and Cappadocia, down to the coast at Antalya and back to Istanbul along the sweeping south and west coasts via Kaş, Ölüdeniz, Selçuk and Gallipoli.

For the history lovers we are, this would be a road trip like no other.

Road Trip Bucket List: An ancient paved road in Ephesus, Turkey.
Modern roads to ancient ones (like this one at Ephesus) make Turkey one of our all-time favourite destinations for road trips around the world.

71. The Atlantic Highway ~ England, UK

Barnstaple to Fraddon | appx. 115km (70 miles) | 3-5 Days

It’s little more than 100km, but some say the Atlantic Highway is one of the top road trips in the UK.

We’re inclined to agree, particularly if you extend it out to take in the full A39 road (of which the Atlantic Highway is one stretch) running through the wonderful coast-and moor landscapes of Devon and Cornwall between historic Bath and the surfside town of Newquay.

This route passes pretty seaside and harbour villages like Bude, Padstow and Clovelly, and mystical sites like ancient Tintagel, legendary birthplace of King Arthur. There are speccy coastal rambles and delicious seafood eats, all with the wild Atlantic in view. Road trip itinerary to come.

72. The Hidden Highway ~ England, UK

Ludlow to Llangollen | appx. 200km (125 miles) | 3-5 Days

This lovely jaunt weaves along country roads and rolling hills through the borderlands of England and Wales.

The invisible divide has changed little in twelve centuries, and the many sites along the way – iron age forts, medieval villages and market towns, ruined castles and abbeys – span as many years and more.

73. South West Explorer ~ England, UK

London to Land’s End Return | appx. 1,350km (840 miles)+ | 2 weeks

One of our favourite UK road trips is this fantastic looping drive from London to Cornwall and back, travelling along the spectacular Jurassic Coast and through the counties of Hampshire, Dorset, Devon, Somerset and Wiltshire.

White cliff walks, moody moors, crumbling castles, fossil beaches, cosy pubs, dramatic coastal scenery, cute seaside villages, ancient towns and even more ancient sites (including Stonehenge), all serve to make this an unforgettable journey and a classic England road trip.

Check out our comprehensive South West England Road Trip Itinerary.

74. Yorkshire Moors and Dales ~ England, UK

York Loop | appx. 725km (450 miles) | 5-7 days

England’s sweeping moors make for some stunning road tripping, and a recent journey through the bucolic landscapes of Yorkshire Dales National Park and North York Moors National Park really brought this home for us.

Starting in the beguiling walled city of Old York, this trip takes in the expansive nature, old market towns, castles and abbeys, snug pubs and warm welcome of England’s north. Road trip itinerary to come.

75. Causeway Coastal Route ~ Northern Ireland, UK

Belfast to Derry-Londonderry | appx. 250km (154 miles) | 7 days

This world-famous route along the beautiful, rugged Causeway Coast of Northern Ireland is a journey of spellbinding scenery, ancient castle ruins, clifftop walks, seaside villages, pretty beaches, and whiskey tasting, culminating in the legendary Giant’s Causeway.

We’ve finally had the chance to travel Northern Ireland and spent just under a week tootling about the countryside and coast between Belfast and Derry-Londonderry. It was pure magic, and one of those grand road trips where you get to spend more time out of the car than in it!

Check out our Causeway Coastal Route Road Trip Itinerary.

The hexagonal stones of the Giant's Causeway sweep away to a grass-covered mountain peak in the background.
The Giant’s Causeway is the pinnacle of a road trip along Northern Ireland’s Causeway Coastal Route.

76. Isle of Skye ~ Scotland, UK

Kyleakin Loop | appx. 520km (325 miles) | 3 days

Beyond its legends of fairies and giants, the Isle of Skye is a land of expansive, fantastical scenery, rolling hills dotted with sheep and the occasional shaggy, orange-coated highland ‘coo’, ancient sites, peaty whisky, brooding mountains and lounging seals.

The walks are wild and wonderful, the pubs cosy and warm, and the Scottish breakfasts singularly epic. Explore the Misty Isle with our Isle of Skye Road Trip itinerary.

World's Best Road Trips: View from the Quiraing on Scotland's Isle of Skye.
The ultimate road trip? Scotland’s spectacular scenery, especially here on the Isle of Skye, makes it a solid contender.

77. North Coast 500 ~ Scotland, UK

Inverness Loop | appx. 1,150km (700 miles) | 1-2 weeks

It is possible to walk all 500 miles of this route (cue the tune), but as the North Coast 500 features on just about all of the world’s best road trip lists, road trip it we did!

This iconic journey skirts the coastal fringe of the northern highlands, showcasing Scotland’s finest scenery and all the things we love best: ancient sites, evocative castles, sea cliffs, moody moorlands and glittering lochs, windswept beaches, stellar wildlife watching and bird spotting, and the chance to feel like you’ve truly escaped the rat race.

While purists might stick to the official 500 mile route, we added some detours to our own drive along this spectacular Scottish route. You can find our North Coast 500 Road Trip Itinerary here.

78. The Dragon’s Spine (Cambrian Way) ~ Wales, UK

Cardiff to Conwy | appx. 285km (180 miles) | 5-7 days

For 1,200 years the dragon has been the Welsh sigil, so Dragon’s Spine is a fitting moniker for this road trip along the country’s mountain ‘backbone’ from south to north.

Also known as the Cambrian Way, the A470 road travels through two of Wales’ spectacular national parks – the Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia – and serves up outdoor adventures like hiking, caving and ziplining.

Add distilleries, breweries, wineries and an extraordinary red kite (hawk) viewing experience, and it all comes together to make this a top UK road trip, one of our surprise faves. Road trip itinerary to come.

Road Trips in the Middle East

The Middle East isn’t necessarily the first place that comes to mind when thinking about epic road trip destinations. And yet it’s among these timeless landscapes that we’ve had some of our greatest driving adventures.

These are ancient places, and yet some of our newest too – lands where gravelly, well-worn roads intersect spanking new freeways, and historic hill-top forts stand as remote, crumbling outposts to dazzling modern cities.

The long and tangible history to be found in the mountains, dunes, deserts, cities and coastlines of this region is without compare, as is the warmth and welcome of the people. A road trip in the Middle East is a road trip you won’t soon forget.

Road Trip List: The Kings Road Winds Through Ancient Jordan.
The winding Kings Road through Jordan is a road trip list must.

79. Amman to Wadi Rum via the Kings Highway ~ Jordan

Amman to Aqaba | appx. 450km (280 miles) | 7-10 days

The ancient landscapes of Jordan have thousands of years of stories to tell, and the road from Amman to Aqaba along the Kings Highway touches on many of them.

With neolithic standing stones, biblical mountains, Roman ruins, Byzantine mosaics, crusader castles, the extraordinary Dana Biosphere Reserve, magical side trips to the Dead Sea and Wadi Rum, plus Petra – one of the New 7 Wonders of the World, there’s a reason Jordan is calling us back for a go-slow road trip.

If time is tight or you’d rather have a driver guide introduce you to Jordan’s top sights, it’s easy to organise a tour out of Amman, like one of these highly-rated 2-3 day trips below.

80. Ancient Phoenicia ~ Lebanon

Beirut Loop | appx. 500km (310 miles) | Up to 2 weeks

Recent years have brought more difficult times to Lebanon, a nation defined by struggle for much of its long history. But this timeless place is as enduring as its legendary cedar tree. The story here spans thousands of years, and it can be found in the people, culture and many archaeological sites that dot the country.

From the bustling Mediterranean cities to the snowcapped mountains and gorgeous inland gorges, extraordinary ancient sites like Baalbek, and the renowned cuisine and warm, vibrant locals, this is a land we one day hope to explore by road.

81. South-East Arabia ~ Oman

Muscat Loop | appx. 1,500km (930 miles) | 2 weeks

Low-key Oman has held its secrets close for millennia. We were intrigued. Cue an amazing two week road trip through a beautiful country of dramatic landscapes: from vast, flat stony deserts to shifting dune deserts, to stunning mountains and gorges.

Medieval watch towers stand sentinel over ancient towns, while off-road adventures, rich culture and Arabian hospitality await. Find out what you can see and do in this amazing country with our in-depth Oman Road Trip Itinerary.

Epic Road Trip Oman: Golden rocks at sunset atop Jebel Shams.
A literal high point on any road trip bucket list is beautiful Oman, where a 4WD gets you off-road and truly off-the-beaten track.

82. City to Desert ~ United Arab Emirates

Dubai to Liwa Oasis | appx. 335km (210 miles) | 2-3 days

While glitzy Dubai and Abu Dhabi have been shaped out of the desert by human hand, just a couple of hours to the south-east stretches one of nature’s most wild and inhospitable places: the vast Empty Quarter.

Edging this harsh landscape, among a great sea of rose-gold sand dunes – including one of the world’s largest – is the Liwa Oasis, a 100km (62 mile) stretch of villages and date palm forests.

The journey to the oasis, along a purpose-built highway through the desert, is itself said to be spectacular, making this a trip worth taking slow.

Road Trips in North America

It’s little surprise that North America, with its big, expansive nature, excellent roads, and well-established road tripping culture, claims the second largest collection on our top 100 road trip list.

The United States of America has dozens and dozens of outstanding dedicated byways, skyways, highways and parkways, while some of the world’s most renowned scenic routes weave a path through Canada’s breathtaking provinces.

Each North American road trip we set out on in these beautiful, diverse, easy-going countries leaves us more keen for the next one.

83. Cabot Trail, Nova Scotia ~ Canada

Baddeck Loop | appx. 300km (185 miles) | Up to a week

You can drive the Cabot Trail in a day, but we’re keen to take our time on this loop around the northern tip of Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, discovering the beautiful landscapes and the island’s unique mix of First Nations, Acadian and Gaelic cultural influences.

In addition to the panoramic scenery, the drive takes in Cape Breton Highlands National Park, where black bears, moose and bald eagles roam, and dozens of hiking trails offer the chance to stretch the legs.

84. Dempster Highway, Yukon ~ Canada

Dawson City to Inuvik | appx. 730km (450 miles)  | 2-3 Days

This incredible journey through the Yukon wilderness has all the hallmarks of an iconic Canadian road trip.

Steeped in history, and traversing an old dog sled route, the Dempster’s unpaved roads are no doubt a challenge. But it’s diverse, it’s remote, and it crosses the Arctic Circle through dense forest full of wildlife, across dramatic tundra, and past the spectacular Mackenzie and Tombstone mountain ranges. A must!

85. Icefields Parkway, Alberta ~ Canada

Lake Louise to Jasper | appx. 230km (140 miles) | 2-3 Days

Based on the pics we’ve seen, we’ll definitely be arguing over who does the driving and who gets to sit in the passenger seat and take in the views on the Icefields Parkway.

This is said to be one of the world’s most spectacular highways, and it comes up regularly when we ask people about their favourite road trip.

Also known as Highway 93, the Icefield Parkway links Banff and Jasper national parks, serving up hundreds of kilometres of mind-blowing Canadian Rockies scenery, including over 100 glaciers, beautiful waterfalls and lakes, and river valleys blanketed in pine and larch forest. So high on the bucket list! Find out more.

86. Montreal to the Gaspé Peninsula ~ Canada

Montreal to Gaspé | appx. 950km (590 miles) | 7-10 days

Montreal and Quebec City have long been in our sights, and our plan for this epic road trip includes both.

Then it leaves the bustling centres behind to wind a coastal route to the tip of the remote and spectacular Gaspé Peninsula, where the history is long and tangible, the birding outstanding, and the scenery superb, with forested wilderness, rugged mountains, ravines and rocky outcrops.

87. Vancouver Island, British Columbia ~ Canada

Nanaimo Loop | appx. 1,500km (930 miles) | Up to 2 weeks

Gorgeous Vancouver Island is an outdoor lover’s dream. While exploring by road means a bit of backtracking in places, it doesn’t matter when there are so many scenic places to stop.

Our own road trip served up giant trees, historic villages, totem pole walks, black bear watching, kayaking, a fossil dig, serene forest hikes, wineries and breweries, second-to-none chowder, bald eagles at every turn, a hike to a plane wreck, and so much more. Road trip itinerary to come.

A snow-capped mountain rises above the road on Vancouver Island, Canada.
Beautiful Vancouver Island serves up epic road trip adventure through stunning scenery packed with wildlife.

88. The Viking Trail, Newfoundland ~ Canada

Deer Lake to St Anthony | appx. 500km (303 miles) | 3-5 days

Viking sagas made the leap across the Atlantic from Europe to North America here, and the landscapes – especially the dramatic mountains and fjords of Gros Morne National Park – are said to be reminiscent of the lands the Vikings left behind.

There are chances en route of spotting moose, whales and, at certain times of year, icebergs! The Viking Trail route culminates in a visit to the thousand-year-old World Heritage Viking settlement site of L’anse aux Meadows.

89. Alaska Highway ~ Canada & USA

Dawson Creek, British Columbia to Delta Junction, Alaska | appx. 2,450km (1,520 miles) | 1-2 weeks+

The Alaska Highway, also known by its nickname, the Alcan Highway, is one of North America’s iconic routes.

Cutting a path through the Canadian Rockies and Yukon, it takes in Canada’s highest peak, alpine trails, First Nations culture, stunning mountain ranges, pristine glacier lakes, and remote, untamed parks.

It’s also grizzly and black bear territory, along with an abundance of other wildlife, including timber wolves, lynx, eagles, elk, moose and more. Plenty of memory cards needed for this trip!

90. Yukon Golden Circle Route ~ Canada & USA

Whitehorse Loop | appx. 568km (352 miles) + car ferry | 7-14 days

The renowned Golden Circle Route loops a truly wild adventure from Whitehorse in Canada to Skagway and Haines in Alaska, then back into Canada and the grizzly bear country of Kluane.

Spectacular alpine scenery awaits, along with vast icefields, picturesque lakes, First Nations sites, Klondike gold rush history, and a ton of outdoor activities and wildlife spotting.

91. Badlands National Park Loop, South Dakota ~ USA

Wall to Cactus Flat | appx. 62km (39 miles) | 2-3 days

It may be one of the shortest routes on our road trip bucket list, but we reckon this journey through the striking geology of the Badlands should be stretched out over days, with early starts and late finishes to max the photo opps.

The road winds among buttes, mounds and pinnacles, while bison, prairie dogs and raptors hang out on the grasslands. With a few extra days, we’d extend the trip into Black Hills National Forest and Custer State Park.

92. Blue Ridge Parkway, Virginia & North Carolina ~ USA

Afton, Virginia to Cherokee, North Carolina | appx. 755km (470 miles) | 5-7 days

I’ve dreamed about visiting the Blue Ridge Mountains since the early 90s, after falling in love with its scenery in Last of the Mohicans.

So it goes without saying that the opportunity to explore the beauty of the central and southern Appalachians has made it onto our road trip bucket list.

The highlights are many on the road between Shenandoah and Great Smoky Mountains national parks: from sampling delicious local food and wine, and learning about Cherokee tradition, to searching out waterfalls, rivers, gorges and caverns, and stretching the legs on wilderness hikes.

A road curves around a bend with misty mountains in the background on a road trip in America.
Drive the scenic trail of the Blue Ridge Parkway, one of many road tripping greats in the US.

93. Dinosaur Diamond Prehistoric Highway, Colorado & Utah ~ USA

Dinosaur Loop | appx. 770km (480 miles) | 1 week

The fossil-nerd in us both gets really excited about this road trip, a journey of around 150-million-years to some of the best dinosaur quarries and trails, fossil displays and museums around.

It even starts and finishes in a town called Dinosaur! Add stunning canyons, rock formations, high plains and petroglyph sites for one amazing prehistoric-themed road trip.

94. Highway to Hana on Maui, Hawaii ~ USA

Paia to Hana | appx. 72km (45 miles) | 1-3 days

Another short-distance contender, the Hana Highway is on our list for its sheer wild beauty as it curves no less than 600 times along the northeast coast of Maui.

Many do the trip in a day, but there’s plenty to do and see en route – including bridges (59 of them!), rainforest hikes, waterfalls, black sand beaches, a lava tube, roadside stands and markets, and all the visual drama of this volcanic, Jurassic Park-like island world.

95. Grand Tetons, Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks, Wyoming & Montana ~ USA

Jackson, Wyoming to West Glacier, Montana | appx. 885+ km (550+ miles) | 10-14 days

Touring through the spectacular landscapes of Wyoming and Montana, this road trip takes in the heavy hitter Grand Teton, Yellowstone and Glacier national parks, and peaks with the iconic, 80km (50 mile) Going-to-the-Sun Road.

Mountains, lakes, canyons, geysers, waterfalls, glaciers, wildlife spotting and tonnes of hiking and outdoor pursuits await.

Unsurprisingly, these are hugely popular parks, so extending a road trip out to two weeks will mean more time to visit before and after the crowds move on. Also, plan ahead as vehicle passes, timed entry and seasonal closures may need to be factored in.

96. Pacific Coast Highway, California to Washington ~ USA

Seattle, Washington to San Diego, California | appx. 2,550km (1,585 miles) | 10-14 days

The Pacific Coast Highway is often touted as the ultimate California road trip, hugging the coast along State Route 1 between Dana Point north of San Diego and the city of Leggett in the state’s north.

Beyond California though, the route intersects with US Highway 101 and from there continues a winding route north through Oregon to Seattle in Washington, effectively taking in the entire west coast.

Between California and Washington, you’ll experience misty rainforest, tall sand dunes, giant redwood forests, the famous Big Sur coast, and beautiful beaches, as well as buzzing cities and cool coastal communities.

Ultimate road trips: Waves roll in to a small beach surrounded by cliffs with palm trees.
Set out on an epic West Coast USA journey from the beaches of southern California.

97. Lake Tahoe to Death Valley via Yosemite, California ~ USA

Lake Tahoe to Death Valley | appx. 1,285km (800 miles) | 7-10 days

Much of this classic American road trip follows Route 395, a journey of diversions from the mountains-and-crystal-clear-waters of Lake Tahoe to the scorching desertscape of Death Valley via the world famous scenery of Yosemite National Park.

While the changing scenery from the car is bound to be superb, the many outdoor opportunities are also a big appeal, as are potential side trips to wineries, hot springs, groves of ancient trees, and historic sites.

98. San Juan Skyway, Colorado ~ USA

Durango Loop | appx. 375km (235 miles) | 3-4 days

There are a couple of nicknames for the Skyway, including America’s Switzerland, and a stretch called the Million Dollar Highway.

This is a high-altitude journey in the shadow of mountains soaring 4,000 metres (13,100+ feet), past waterfalls and hot springs, via the famous ski resort of Telluride, and the intriguing Native American cliff dwellings of Mesa Verde National Park. There’s plenty of hiking, epic panos, and breweries to end each day.

The Ultimate Road Trip Across the USA?

According to science, apparently so. This 22,046 km (13,699 mile) adventure was created by algorithm and loops through all of the 48 connected states of the USA, stopping at a major landmark in each.

Apparently you could cover it in 224 hours straight if you were keen (and had a friend mad enough to share the driving). For us, though, this one’s more like a lifetime of mini-trips.

The guy that created it has also built an itinerary visiting every national park in the linked, mainland states. Epic!

99. Seward Highway, Alaska ~ USA

Anchorage to Seward | appx. 210km (130 miles) | 2-3 days

The wonderful wilds of Alaska are squarely in our sights. There are a range of drives we hope to do here, like Denali National Park, but the Seward Highway is a stand out.

The big nature alone is magnetic – snow-capped mountains, hanging glaciers, dramatic fjords and vibrant wetlands. But it’s the peak wildlife watching that gets us really jazzed about a road trip here: humpback whales, orca, belugas, sea lions, otters, black bears and more than a hundred species of bird are just the tip of the iceberg.

100. National Parks Trail, Utah ~ USA

Salt Lake City Loop | appx. 2,000 km (1,250 miles) | 2-3 weeks

Utah may well have one of the greatest concentrations of world-class parks and monuments on the planet. And we’re keen to see them all.

We’ve mapped a road trip loop for our bucket list that takes in the state’s showstoppers, like Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park, Monument Valley, Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon National Park, along with extraordinary places like San Rafael Swell, Goblin Valley State Park, dinosaur trails and the petroglyphs of Newspaper Rock. We cannot wait to drive this route!

Road trips around the world: The rocky rises of Sedona tower over the road.
The USA is home to some of the best drives in the world – this is a flashback to our very first American road trip together through stunning Sedona, Arizona.
